Trine Søndergaard - Now That You Are Mine, Steidl, 2003, Göttingen
Hardcover.
There is a dangerously sentimental mythology about prostitution in the media that contends that it is merely a lifestyle choice. For some it may be, and Rob Philip argues this in his book On the Game, but for those at the lower end of the trade, out on the streets around Copenhagen's railway station, their bodies are the only thing they have to sell, often in order to buy drugs. They are doubly exploited; it is hardly a matter of choice.
Trine Søndergaard began her project on prostitution when she herself was subject to harassment by men on the street where she lived, which was in Copenhagen's red-light district. She got to know the working girls and began to photograph them and their lives. The resulting book, Now That You Are Mine, is a particular blend of candour and empathy, and a view as far removed from either the sentimental or the prurient view of prostitution as it could possibly be.
Søndergaard's adoption of a Diane Arbus aesthetic - square format and flash - has two advantages. Firstly it made her conspicuous, demanding her subjects' cooperation, and secondly the large square negative rendered everything with a forensic clarity. It could be said that Søndergaard needed this cruelty in order to be kind; that is, in order to reveal the difficult lives of these women with honesty, even rage, in order to draw our attention to them and at the very least to make us think about the frequently misogynist nature of sexual desire.
