Quotes by Gerry Johansson:

"I have over the years been photographing a lot in color but usually found it a bit irritating. I try it now and then but always return to b&w. For me b&w is like listening to the radio and color like watching television."

"For every picture you make you sort of start with a clean sheet of paper. When you work with 35 mm or 8 x 10 format you have to start with a decision, horizontal or vertical. Both formats have a strong sense of direction that may help you or confuse you in relation to your subject/motive. When you look in the viewfinder of a Rollei or Hasselblad there is this wonderful square, neutral space you can build and structure your pictures in."

"When planning Amerika, 1998, | was approached by my friend and designer, Henrik Nygren. Since this had to be a self publication project Henrik decided on a small economical format of 24 x 17 cm and it was Henrik's idea to make the images 9 x 9 cm, after all g x 9 cm is an old standard size for family photos in albums. My first impression was that they were awfully small but I went along with his suggestion changing only the format to 9,2 cm high and 9 cm wide. This slight change made them look perfectly square on the page."
